I would add oats to the budget list.

Dr Arif Hussenbux MBBS's avatar

Lots more I could add! Don't want to bore everyone 🤣

Judge Ina's avatar

Also barley flakes

Tricia Fiddian's avatar

I would also add oats! And my favourite snack is walnuts!

Love this list! People are looking for more healthy bang for their buck, and these hit the spot.

Beans on toast will never die!

Fodmap problems here. I sub canned lentils for legumes. Mixed veggies are good if you can find ones without peas. Asian ones come with seasoning/sauce, so I lightly steam/nuke them, then rinse or drain before I add to my stir fry. I tolerate some things, but can’t stack a lot. Thanks for your article. I’m off my usual big salads and am choosing fruits with smooth skins/peelable, etc. because of US problems with Cyclospora right now. Frozen veggies and fruits as well as canned are good alternatives if you can avoid salt added sugar or corn syrup. All can be rinsed.

You have just described my standard base diet ! Beans on homebaked wholemeal seeded bread. Topped with eggs or cheese. Occasional fish & frozen veg. Plus fruit.

All i can afford ! Luxury once a month of a meat dish and that is it 😂🫣

Lucky enough to have a sunny 8x8 ft spot of land to plant beans and cucumbers. I blanche and freeze the green beans and make pickles from the cucumbers.

Dr Arif Hussenbux MBBS's avatar

Wow that’s brilliant!

Dr A, have you done a column on the benefits of lacto-fermenting vegetables and fruits, and did I miss it?

Jul 21Edited

For those without freezer space, lacto-fermenting (using only salt and water) is also great. As well as being great for the gut.

Dr Arif Hussenbux MBBS's avatar

I have written about postbiotics - check it out!

Tracey Savva's avatar

Excellent advice. Staples, that are affordable for most and help us and our guts.

Red and green lentils are another budget standby for me.

Debbie's avatar

What? You forgot Gut’s best friend sauerkraut

Dr Arif Hussenbux MBBS's avatar

Haha I love sauerkraut - I spoke about it in my postbiotic article

Think I'd add unsalted nuts. Maybe more expensive but good source of protein etc.

I love the list you've given - just cannot beat beans on toast. Oh and how can anyone not eat the yolk of an egg - sacrilege!!

Dr Arif Hussenbux MBBS's avatar

I agree! Yes I could have added much more! May need to make a part 2

Thanks for a great list.

Frozen vegetables make great soup, roast them a bit in the oven then vroom them up with broth and herbs and salt . Add heat if you like it. If you swirl in an egg you get egg drop soup.

Julie's avatar

Thank You

Christine Cooper's avatar

Mushy peas on toast are great too - liven them up with a swirl of harissa or hot sauce. Add an egg - that’s a great meal.

Great no-nonsense piece. Side note: Has anyone wise noticed how hard it is to find tuna in brine these days?! So many different flavours. But brine is best.

Dr Arif Hussenbux MBBS's avatar

Thank you! I avoid the brine tins you can take mine!
